UK ETA — your questions answered
Do US, Canadian, or Australian citizens need a visa for the UK?
No — most travelers from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the EU, and other visa-exempt countries don't need a traditional UK visa for tourism, business, or short visits. Instead, you need a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), which is the document VisaPilot helps you get.
What's the difference between a UK visa and a UK ETA?
A UK visa is a longer, more complex application (often requiring interviews and supporting documents) for nationalities that need one, or for longer stays and specific purposes like work or study. The UK ETA is a simple, digital pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors staying up to 6 months — think of it like the US ESTA.
How much does a UK ETA cost?
The UK government fee is £40 per person (about $52 USD), which increased from £16 on 8 April 2026. Our Travel USP service fee is $47, so your all-in total is around $99 per traveler. You can also apply directly at gov.uk/eta for the £40 government fee alone, without our review or support.
How long does it take to get a UK ETA?
Most ETAs are approved within minutes of submission, but the UK Home Office states processing can take up to 3 working days, especially if your application requires manual review. We recommend applying at least 3–5 days before travel. We submit your application within hours of receiving it.
How long is a UK ETA valid?
A UK ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During that period you can make unlimited trips, each up to 6 months long.
Can I use the UK ETA to visit England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland?
Yes — the UK ETA covers all four UK nations (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) as well as Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man.
Is VisaPilot the official UK ETA website?
No. Travel USP is an independent concierge service. We're not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the UK government or the Home Office. The official UK ETA website is gov.uk/eta, where you can apply directly for the £40 government fee alone. We charge a $47 service fee on top for expert review, 24/7 support, and refund protection.
What happens if my application is denied?
If the UK Home Office denies your ETA, we refund our $47 service fee in full. The £40 UK government fee is non-refundable by the Home Office regardless of outcome. Depending on the reason for denial, you may be able to reapply or apply for a Standard Visitor Visa instead.
